BarbaraS1: been a long time DennisOl: There you are! <<winks>> JeffC: Hi Barbara. VanceS: hi folks, sorry I was in my office and never refreshed the ONLINE tab BarbaraS1: hi jeff BarbaraS1: he thought the room was empty DennisOl: There's someone named Sylwia in the WebheadsAction room. She's been there for a while. VanceS: I'm looking over quentin desouza's amazing google earth tutorials BarbaraS1: very nice DennisOl: Haven't seen them. DennisOl: But I'd like to check them out. VanceS: try this one http://www.teachinghacks.com/files/panels/panels.html DennisOl: OK. Will do. DennisOl: BTW, I've got a tech question for you. VanceS: I'm curious if the link works VanceS: if so we can access these outside of knowplace DennisOl: Hold on and I'll check it. JeffC: it's loading DennisOl: Yes, it works. I'm watching the movie and listening to the audio. VanceS: ok I'm tagging them in del.icio.us DennisOl: Great! VanceS: can share them that way VanceS: what was your tech question DennisOl: Oh. I have a QuickTime movie that I'm trying to upload to my website. DennisOl: But it's a large file, of course. DennisOl: I'm trying to ftp it, but the server always stalls out before the upload is complete. VanceS: how big is it? VanceS: and what site (nature of,) DennisOl: 49.9 mb JeffC: do you have quicktime pro? maybe converting it to mp3 would help. DennisOl: to my personal website server DennisOl: Yes, I have QuickTime Pro. I hadn't thought of converting it to mp3. JeffC: that's large, but unless you're on dial-up it shouldn't time out. DennisOl: Or would that be mp4? JeffC: either way DennisOl: No, I'm on a high-speed cable modem. DennisOl: OK. JeffC: then you definitely shouldn't time out. DennisOl: I tried converting it and thought I had succeeded, but I guess I didn't. VanceS: upload limitations at your site? JeffC: try uploading it to another site... like http://www.ourmedia.org DennisOl: There might be, but I've uploaded videos there before. DennisOl: OK. I' DennisOl: I'll try that. DennisOl: Is it a publicly accessible site? JeffC: yes DennisOl: Can I password-protect the video? JeffC: but you can protect it (if i recall haven't used it in a while) DennisOl: OK. That's good enough. JeffC: it's a collaboratory... like tapped in for audio/video... but my recollection is that like tapped in, you can make things public or private. DennisOl: OK. That's ideal. DennisOl: I've just accessed the site. For now, I'll save the URL and then go back later. DennisOl: Many thanks, Jeff! DennisOl: I'll let you know later how it works out. VanceS: To get to quentin's site go to http://knowschools.ca/ DennisOl: Vance, Nina Lyulkun in Ukraine is a great admirer of Jeff. VanceS: create an acct and see DennisOl: OK. Thanks, Vance. JoaoA: I am back JoaoA: Hello Vance VanceS: of Jeff Cooper? DennisOl: The Jeff who's here right now! DennisOl: So yes! JoaoA: Are you talking about the open weekend at Knowschool? VanceS: yep a not so secret admirer VanceS: yes JoaoA: It's been very interesting. DennisOl: See what I mean, Jeff? ("a not so secret admirer") DennisOl: Tell me more, Joćo. JoaoA: I have been doing the activities he proposes DennisOl: Great! VanceS: looks like a great courses JoaoA: Quentin has a well organised course there. He prepared real online activities for us to do. He used Adobe Presenter to do and it worked out very interesting. DennisOl: My coffee cup is empty. Back shortly . . . . JoaoA: So far I have done the first two activities but I want to go doing them today. VanceS: i'm capturing what I can here JoaoA: I don't have any experience with Google Earth at all except playing with it a bit. JoaoA: But I am aware that it can be a powerful tool in teaching and very motivating for the students too VanceS: This is very comprehensive JoaoA: Are you looking at it right now, Vance? JeffC: Bj and I will be doing a week at KnowSchools on mostly free collaborative sites for K-12+. JeffC: in Feb JoaoA: That's great, Jeff VanceS: yeah, right now DennisOl: I'm back. My experiences with Google Earth have been like yours, Joćo. DennisOl: Sounds god, Jeff. DennisOl: Oops. good. JeffC: http://knowschools.ca/moodle/mod/book/view.php?id=1228&chapterid=143 DennisOl: Do I need a password to access that URL, Jeff? VanceS: you need to create an account VanceS: free, quick JeffC: yeah DennisOl: OK. I was just about to ask about that. DennisOl: Thanks. VanceS: I tagged all the resources not actually at the Knowschools site VanceS: http://del.icio.us/vancestevens/google_earth DennisOl: Terrific! DennisOl: BTW, I've got another question. VanceS: if they stay where they are you can see them later DennisOl: OK. SylwiaK joined the room. VanceS prepares to receive Dennis/s question DennisOl: Sylwia! DennisOl: Welcome back! DennisOl: OK. Here's my question: BarbaraS1 left the room (signed off). SylwiaK left the room. VanceS waves to Sylwia DennisOl: Is there an EVO kick-off session today? VanceS . o O ( that was a wave goodbye I think ) DennisOl: Maybe Sylwia wil come back. She was here once before. VanceS: yes there is DennisOl: OK, I thought so. JoaoA: Vance, thanks for the delicious link about GE. VanceS: at 16:00 gmt DennisOl: It hasn't been very well publicized. JoaoA: Yes, there is, Dennis. At 16 GMT JoaoA: Wich courses have you enrolled in? JoaoA: which DennisOl: BaW08, Blogging for Educators, and Barbara Dieu's Social Networking. VanceS: I am helping with several VanceS: music VanceS: SMiELT DennisOl: This is VERY ambitious. VanceS: blogging 4 educators JoaoA: I am in Barabara's and PPT DennisOl: Yes, SMiELT. DennisOl: I'm also helping with BaW08 and B4E. DennisOl: I'd love to be part of the Music sesion, but I'm overextended as it is. JoaoA: what is BaW08 about? DennisOl: It's like the other Becoming a Webhead sessions: VanceS: web 2.0 VanceS: they are all good DennisOl: It's off to a very good start already, Joćo. DennisOl: Yes, they're DEFINITELY good! JoaoA: is it a kinf of introduction to web 2,0 tools? DennisOl: Yes, VanceS: for the kickoff, http://www.webheadsinaction.org JoaoA: Ok, thanks Dennis DennisOl: De Nada! JoaoA: I am very curious about these courses since it's my first time attending them DennisOl: They're very useful, Joćo. DennisOl: a wonderful way to become familiar with a wide variety of online tools and resources . . . JoaoA: I am particularly anxious about the SMiELT course VanceS: anxious? JoaoA: I am sure it is VanceS: you mean with anticipation JoaoA: yes, Vance DennisOl: . . . and also an excellent way to make new contacts and establish new networks. DennisOl: It's interesting, isn't it, how anxious has a kind of negative meaning in English. DennisOl: anxious = worried JoaoA: not that I am nervous or so, Vance. I am just anticipating the excitement VanceS: anxious for it to begin DennisOl: It's like 'tener duda' in Spanish. VanceS: that has a positive connotation JoaoA: Ok, I didn't mean worried, no. I meant just filled with expectation DennisOl: Which is translated into English as 'I have a doubt / doubts about . . .' VanceS: she has been working so hard on it JoaoA: I am sorry. I didn't mean it that way, sorry. DennisOl: I see that very, very often. When I see it in English, I'm thrown off guard because to me, it means 'I know about something but I don't believe it' or 'I know about something but I think it isn't true.' DennisOl: Joćo: Don't apologize! JoaoA: Oh, sorry, I didn't know it had that conotation DennisOl: I'm trying to learn Portuguese and my brain freezes every time I run into special connotations or idioms. VanceS: anxious to begin means the opposite, good vibes DennisOl: Yes. It's interesting how a slightly different arrangement of words changes everything. JoaoA: Yes, it's a kind of a false friend for us Portuguese. DennisOl: There are lots of false friends among various languages! DennisOl: A friend wrote a Master's thesis with the title "Between No More and Drink a Chair." It was all about false friends! JoaoA: I should have said "I am particularly excited about SMiELT VanceS: yes, true, or you were anxious for it to begin JoaoA: lol DennisOl: ("Between No More" = Éntre no mįs = 'Come on In/) JoaoA: Interesting VanceS: lookum you behind (PNG pigin wontok) VanceS: know what it means? JoaoA: or similar JoaoA: I would like to test my headset MoiraH: Please join the conference as this is Nina's first hosted conference which I threw on her ;-) DennisOl: In Bislama, "See you later" is 'Lukim yu' or 'Tata.' MoiraH: and she's doiing great DennisOl: OK. I'll join. Hold on . . . . NinaTL: Tata is the new $2000 Indian car MoiraH: Joao, come to the conference then VanceS: the company that makes it, yes JoaoA: where? VanceS: Nina hung up on Dennis and ours came back NinaTL: Vance, you make me sound rude! NinaTL: Sweet dreams, Jeff VanceS: no, that was the correct procedure for resuming the chat VanceS: once you'd accepted a conference call DennisOl: And Dennis was aware of that. VanceS: yes, not rude, just tryng to work out what happens DennisOl: You didn't seem rude to me! NinaTL :-) VanceS: Vanuatu is an island in the South Pacific RobE joined the room.
